From Russia, with Resilience: introducing Lilibet
Some cats arrive. Lilibet landed. Quite literally, from halfway around the world, her and I both stepping into the unknown.
She came to us from Russia on a dark and rainy September night, the kind of weather that seems to wrap itself around a moment and hold it still. The rain carried on through to late the next morning, grey and steady. But on my flight home with her, something shifted — the clouds broke open and gave way to a beautiful rainbow. It felt, in the best possible way, like a sign of things to come.Travel is hard on any creature, but Lilibet had carried an extra weight: she had weaned her last litter of kittens just weeks before departure. By the time she arrived, she was thin, frightened, and carrying the particular kind of quiet that comes from a body and a spirit that have simply given too much.
We knew the road back wouldn't be straightforward. Recovery rarely is.
The Long Way Back
What followed was a slow, patient, and sometimes nonlinear process of rebuilding both physically and emotionally. We leaned heavily on experienced and educated mentors within the Maine Coon community as well as the team at our local vet clinic, who were steady and knowledgeable guides throughout. Our dear friend Kait offered Reiki sessions that we believe helped Lilibet find some stillness in those early, unsettled weeks. And on our end? Lots of treats. Lots of cuddles. And a willingness to let her set the pace.
There were weeks that felt like breakthroughs, and weeks that felt like backslides. But we kept showing up, and, gradually, so did she.
Nine Months In
Today, Lilibet is a different cat. She is happy, healthy, and fully herself. She has gained four and a half pounds and, more importantly, has gained something that can't be measured on a scale: confidence. She has settled into this home as though she has always known it was hers.
Every evening, she earns her unofficial title of Top Biscuit Maker, kneading away with remarkable dedication before curling in for the night. She has soft, quiet chirps and trills that punctuate her days. And she has become my shadow following me from room to room with a gentle presence that is close but never intrusive. If her colouring were any darker, I'd have renamed her accordingly!
She is a Maine Coon through and through: dignified, gentle, deeply observant.
What Comes Next
Lilibet’s story is poised to write her next beautiful chapter. We are cautiously and excitedly optimistic that Lilibet will be welcoming a new litter in the coming weeks. Her body is strong, her spirit is settled, and we cannot wait to watch her step into motherhood on her own terms, this time with a full support system around her. We will be right there alongside her, every step of the way.
It feels fitting, somehow. A cat who arrived with so little left to give, now healthy enough to give so much.
Worth Every Step
Not all journeys are linear. Lilibet's certainly wasn't. But watching her blossom from a fearful, fragile arrival into a confident, thriving companion (and soon, a mother again) has been one of the quiet joys of this past year.
We are so grateful for the support that surrounded her recovery, and for the trust she has slowly, beautifully extended to us.
Welcome home, Lilibet. We're so glad you're here. 🐾
