GENERAL FAQ’S
-
Maine Coons are widely considered one of the best cat breeds for families, provided expectations are realistic.
They are known for being:
~Gentle and patient with children.
~Social and tolerant of respectful dogs
~Curious and playful without being hyper
~Emotionally intuitive and people-focused
Maine Coons tend to enjoy being involved in family life. They often sit nearby rather than on laps, observe activities, and engage when invited. This makes them an excellent choice for households that want a companion animal rather than a purely independent cat.
Early socialization plays a huge role in temperament, which is why how a kitten is raised matters just as much as its genetics. -
Maine Coons are one of the largest domesticated cat breeds, both in weight and overall length.
~Adult males: commonly 15–25 pounds
~Adult females: typically 12–18 pounds
~Body length: can reach up to 40 inches including the tail
What surprises many new owners is not just their size, but how long they take to grow. Maine Coons mature slowly and may not reach full physical development until 3 to 5 years of age. During this time, their bodies continue to fill out, their bone structure strengthens, and their characteristic mane and tail fully develop.
This slow growth rate is one reason nutrition, genetics, and responsible breeding matter so much with this breed. -
Factors that influence lifespan include:
~Genetics and breeding practices
~Diet quality ( just live in humans, a healthy diet is so important)
~Indoor vs outdoor living
~Preventative veterinary care
~Weight management ( a fat cat is not funny, it causes so many health problems)
Maine Coons benefit from being kept indoors, where they are protected from accidents, predators, and disease exposure. -
Maine Coons are generally healthy cats when bred responsibly, but like all purebred animals, they can be predisposed to certain genetic conditions.
Conditions breeders commonly screen for include:
~Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)
~Hip dysplasia
~Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)Reputable breeders test breeding cats, track lineage health, and provide written health guarantees. Buyers should always ask what testing has been done and what protections are included, and at Riverlynx Maine Coons this is one of our highest priorities.
-
Maine Coons are not high maintenance emotionally, but they do require commitment as does any family member.
Potential owners should be prepared for:
~Larger food and grooming needs
~Regular interaction and enrichment
~Long-term responsibility for a large breed cat
~They are best suited for people who value companionship and are willing to invest time and care. -
Known as "gentle giants," they are highly intelligent, playful, and patient with families. While incredibly sociable and chatty, they typically prefer hanging out beside you rather than sitting directly on your lap.
Key Temperament Traits
Dog-Like Loyalty: They tend to attach deeply to their human families, often following them from room to room, greeting guests at the door, and even learning to play fetch.
Playful & Goofy: They maintain their kittenish energy well into adulthood and are famous for their clumsy, clown-like antics.
Highly Talkative: Instead of a traditional meow, they are famous for an extensive vocabulary of chirps, trills, and chatty vocalizations.
Water & Adventure Loving: Due to their history as ship cats and rat catchers, they often retain an unusual fascination with water and will happily play with dripping taps.
Social With Pets: Their relaxed nature makes them highly adaptable to noisy households, and they generally get along wonderfully with children and other pets.
